Here's my little report, I hope you like it.
Gail.

October's hike took us across the wooded mountain ridge that separates the prefectures of Wakayama, Osaka and Nara. Our group of fourteen people started off at 10:30 from Musota Station, a few stops before Wakayama on the Hanwa Tennoji-Wakayama line. We quickly reached the woods and it was a comfortable uphill walk for two hours or so, then two hours or so back down on the other side of the ridge. On the day of our hike it was, I was told later on, raining in Osaka. We didn't get any rain at all, but presumably that was because it had all fallen the night before: there were gorgeous mushrooms all along the trail. I have never seen so many different kinds of mushroom, and such beautiful specimens. If only Iknew something about mushrooms, I would have been able to take back home two weeks' worth of lunch. But many of the mushrooms seemed to have been inspected by wild boar who'd dug up the earth around them, and I suspect that if even the pigs won't
touch'em, we had better keep away from them, too. There were also big spiders along the way, with their webs crossing our paths (or us crossing theirs, as it were). I don't think these spiders quite appreciated the fact that we sometimes literally went out of our way to not damage their webs. (And of course you don't really want a big spider crawling into your shirt). They didn't seem to be eating much, either; all they seemed to have caught in their webs were dead leaves. Yes, this hike was definitely an autumn hike: no mosquitoes, not much sun, quite a bit of mud here and there, and in the afternoon I wished I'd brought something warm to wear over my shirt. For lunch, one of us had brought grapes; they wereprobably this year's last. We had some beautiful views over the Wakayama plain to the South and later on of the sea to the North. Before beginning our descent, we spent a fair amount of time watching the planes cross the sky and land at Kansai
Airport. When we got back on the Nankai train to Nanba at Hakotsukuri, it felt like the day was almost over already.
