Fukunishi-san was not joking when he said “May is usually one of the best months for hiking in the Kansai.” On Sunday, 11 May 2014, a gorgeous sunny day with low humidity, the Kansai Ramblers visited extremely verdant Mount Kongo, Osaka Prefecture's highest mountain (1,125 metres/3,691 feet). Although Mount Kongo is a bit higher than Mount Rokko, it is not as steep or crowded.

Some of the contingent met at the central entrance/exit of JR Tennoji station in Osaka, the remainder joining the group at Oji station (Nara Prefecture) or Kitauchi station (Nara Prefecture), the starting point of the hike.

While walking through the village to get to the beginning of the hiking trail, we were entertained by a bird called a keri in Japanese (Latin, Vanellus cinereus; English, grey-headed lapwing). It was flying around emitting its distress call because it had a nest containing eggs or fledglings in one of the fields below. The keri is unusual in that its legs extend beyond its tail when in flight.

Then the actual hike started through the beautiful fresh greenery that envelops Mount Kongo. The lunch stop was at a pretty waterfall on the way up to the summit. After lunch, the hike continued up to a recreation area near the top of the Mount Kongo Ropeway. Here the group was treated to a rare botanical event, the flowering of a yukimochisou (Latin, Arisaema sikokianum; English, Jack-in-the-pulpit), a herbaceous perennial plant. This plant was greatly admired in eighteenth century Japan. There is a beautiful woodblock print of a yukimochisou by Kono Bairei (1844-95).

Because of time constraints, the majority of the group decided to descend, a splinter group continuing to the actual summit. The descent involved the Mount Kongo Ropeway, which is unique in being the only ropeway in Japan that is owned by a village. Opened in 1966, the ropeway is 1.3 kilometres/0.8 miles long, and has a vertical drop of 267 metres/876 feet, an operational speed of 5 metres per second, and a journey time of 6 minutes.

From the base of the ropeway, we took a Nankai bus to Nankai Kawachinagano station (Osaka Prefecture). The 6 hour/14 kilometre hike, with its spectacular scenery and convivial company, was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
